As an update to the Champions of John Glenn program, we are proud to announce that 420 students have registered this semester! Although the cap was 400, we couldn’t say no to any student who expressed an interest. With this much enthusiasm, we decided to raise the cap from 400 to 600 students next semester!
The mentoring portion of Champions of John Glenn has also been successful. Over 90 mentors have committed to the program including teachers, school janitors, school resource police officers, John Glenn’s school superintendent, Dr. Michele Harmala, and Westland’s Mayor Bill Wild. Next semester, Wayne-Westland School Board members and Wayne’s Mayor Susan Rowe will be volunteering as mentors.
Our first Champions of John Glenn banquet will be held on February 10 at the Hellenic Cultural Center where we will announce that 61% of registered students increased their grade point average and 33% of the students achieved their goal! That means if a student had a 2.5 GPA, they increased it to 3.0 … the result of hard work, dedication and commitment from everyone involved!
We are asking that you also make a commitment to the Champions of John Glenn program by becoming a donor. Checks may be made payable to the Westland Community Foundation and will be used toward next semester’s banquet.
Please help us celebrate the success of the Champions of John Glenn program and the youth of our City with your donation and attendance on February 10. Thank you for your continued support and dedication.
